I combine the structure and accountability of a supervisor, the creativity and purpose of a social entrepreneur, and the bridge-building instincts of a change leader. For more than 25 years, I’ve worked at the intersection of governance, justice, and sustainability - helping organisations navigate complexity and deliver meaningful impact.

 

I am recognized for my ability to navigate multi-stakeholder environments, cope with institutional complexity, advance innovation, and build teams and deliver results. I have held both executive and board-level roles in internationally operating organizations - guiding strategy, securing funding, building collaborative partnerships, and supporting transformation in diverse, often high-risk, politically sensitive contexts.

 

I currently serve on the Managing Board of the EU Fundamental Rights Agency. Previously, I chaired the Supervisory Board of WWF Netherlands, served as a trustee of WWF International, and chaired the Wildlife Justice Commission. I was a member of two World Economic Forum Global Agenda Councils (governance and justice innovation) and of the Justice Action Coalition Advisory Board. As partner of Justice Compass Advisers, I advise clients on strategy, transformation, and innovation.

 

Earlier, I helped establish the International Criminal Court and scale the Yugoslav Tribunal, before founding and leading the Hague Institute for Innovation of Law (HiiL) and the Wildlife Justice Commission, ventures that pioneered people-centred approaches to justice, governance, and conservation. I also hold a Board Member certification.

 

My leadership philosophy is simple: connect vision with people and structure, and anchor it in performance. Whether supervising teams, advising leaders, or building new institutions, I work to make systems function better for people and planet.

 

For my work on justice and democracy, I received the Tällberg-SNS Global Leadership Prize in 2022 and, in 2024, a Dutch Royal Decoration for contributions to rule of law and environmental conservation.
